Winners and Losers

Came across this tweet this morning from Startup Weekend Vancouver.

“You were born to win, but to be a winner, you must plan to win, prepare to win, and expect to win.” -Zig Ziglar

What does it mean? Zig is a popular motivational speaker. When I hear it, it gets me going. But critical-thinking mind is putting a brake on it.

“You were made to be prince and princesses of the Kingdom of King of kings. But instead you wanted to be kings yourselves, and so it happens. You are now headed to be winners in eternal fire. But your perfect Big brother came to rescue you. Telling you to be losers, hold loosely on your plans, prepare to lose your life, and expect to suffer. So that you can be victors in eternal Kingdom with the King again, as prince and princesses”

What does winning really mean?

When we are told that we were born to be winners. What cord does it strike? If we are already winners, it doesn’t say much. If we aren’t winners yet, perhaps it gives the hope that as long as we have the right mindset and plans, and expect it, we can be winners one day. Perhaps we are thirst for significance? Thirst for power? Thirst to be somebody as oppose nobody?

What if your company fails? What if your startup never amount to anything? What if you lose everything?

Are you a loser?

Knowledge Overload

I am foremost motivated by return on investment, followed by pursue of knowledge. This explains why I read a lot and get fascinated by new things. Though I am faced with a conviction lately; ‘Knowledge is essential, but is not sufficient’. The more I load into the mind and the more training it gets, the less and less I involve the heart. What is my heart telling me? Do I even hear it? If I can’t hear the heart clearly, how do I feel the Holy Spirit’s leading?

The difference between doing something based on mind and knowledge, versus doing something based on heart is Love. Not just the feeling of love, but the real Love.

At this thought, what Paul said comes to mind. Something about ‘I can prophesies, I can do all these things, but if there is no love, I am nothing’…..yes, that doesn’t do this verse a justice. So I will quote out of the Bible straight: 1 Corinthians 13:2 “And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.”

So, it’s time to make friends again, the mind and the heart. Mind, meet Heart. Heart, meet Mind. Both, meet Jesus.

On a separate note, I feel the older I get, the less I feel about ‘I can do all things through him who strengthens me.’. I look at failure differently now; I used to think failure is part of learning, part of life, part of stepping stone getting me to the goal. Now, it’s quite the opposite. Not good.

Faith in People

Time after time, I am coming up to the conclusion that I just simply cannot place faith in people.  They will let you down.  Something about what my uncle had said years back coming back in full loop.

This is not a surprise though since I’ve sort of known.  However, the situation gets the better side of me; in the moment excitement and wanting to share it with people.  Another attempt, another email and another disappointing turn-out.  No response.  Indifferent.

Perhaps the communication could’ve been done differently.  Different words could be chosen.  Email subject line could’ve used some catchy phrases and attention grabbers.  The reasons for why could go on, but I know it’s none of this.  It’s just how selfish, how wrapped up in our own world we are, how small world view we have, and how little our hearts are impacted by things outside of ‘what’s in it for me’.

I don’t know how to put faith in people.  You shouldn’t put faith in people. I am thinking that’s right.  You can’t.  But there is someone you can put faith in, and for people.
